9/11 Six Years Later: Time to Renew our Commitment to Winning the Global War on Terror
by Steve Sauerberg, M.D.
September 11, 2007

(Western Springs, IL) - "Six years ago our world changed forever. Radical Islam's war on the west did not start on that fateful morning six years ago - no, their war on our way of life started many years before then. While September 11th doesn't mark the beginning of this war it does, however, mark an important beginning - the beginning of our commitment to fight back, to defend our values and our way of life.

It began on United flight 93, when dozens of brave men and women decided to take the fight to their terrorist captors. In making the ultimate sacrifice, the heroes of flight 93 saved thousands, potentially tens of thousands, of lives and most importantly their actions marked the first strike back by Americans at our terrorist enemies.

Six years later, it is time for us to renew our commitment to winning the global war on terror. It is a time when we should remember the victims and the heroes of September 11th. It is a time when we should not only remember their sacrifices, and the sacrifices of their families, but a time when we should honor that sacrifice by recommitting to fighting and defeating the forces of radical Islam.

Too many of the politicians in Washington have forgotten the lessons of September 11th. For far too many of them - like our own Senator Dick Durbin - a commitment to winning the global war on terror has sadly been replaced by a cynical commitment to score political points.

Contrary to the wild-eyed charges of Dick Durbin's friends on the left - we did not ask for this war nor did we start it, but we should be committed to winning it. The radical Islamic terrorists who struck us on September 11, 2001 continue to pose a real and serious threat to our nation's safety.

What we need in Washington right now is leadership. We need elected leaders who will support our troops - not use them as political pawns by threatening to de-fund them. We need elected leaders who will fight to give our law enforcement agencies all the tools necessary to find and destroy terrorist networks at home and abroad, not politicians doing all they can to hamstring these efforts. We need elected officials who will trust the judgment of our military leaders on the ground, not politicians more interested in winning the partisan political battle at home than they are the real war abroad.

The bottom line is that we need to renew our commitment to winning the global war on terror. The career politicians like Dick Durbin have forgotten the lessons of 9/11, but like most Americans, I haven't. When I am the Senator from Illinois, I pledge to remain vigilant in our commitment to fighting and winning the war against radical Islam."
